How to Setup Country‑Specific Free Shipping Thresholds

Selling products in another country is not as simple as it sounds. One overlooked element is the free shipping threshold. Some merchants might keep their free shipping amount the same for every country. But that is a mistake.

Why Set Up Country-Specific Free Shipping Thresholds?

Shipping to different countries costs more money. Shipping a product to Europe from the US will cost more than US domestic shipping. Shopify Merchants should adjust their free shipping threshold to account for the increase. Different countries use different currencies. If the free shipping price is not adjusted, a Shopify Merchant may lose money. The currency exchange rates change often. A Shopify Merchant may lose money if the rates drop to an unfavorable rate.

How to Create Country-Specific Free Shipping Thresholds

1. Install Apps

The first step is to install the apps needed. One important app is the “Translation and Adapt” app. The app translates all the text on the pages, even the free shipping bar. Then, install “X Away from Free Shipping,” the free shipping progress bar for visitors. The message the app displays can change based on the country of the visitor.

2. Create Market

The next step is to create a new market. Click on “Markets” in the admin dashboard. Click, “Create Market” and give the market a name. To be clear, a market does not need to have one country; it can contain several.

3. Theme Editor

In the theme editor, start by adding any product to the cart. This will guarantee the free shipping bar will display. Next, edit the cart page. Click the bar on the top titled, “Store Default.” Then, select “United States” or the other country. A Shopify Merchant can edit pages for the specific market now. Click “Add section to United States.” Then, click the “Apps” tab and select “X Away from Free Shipping.

X Away from Free Shipping

First, change the free shipping threshold, the app auto-fills with $50. Next, change the style of the bar, choose solid or striped. A Shopify Merchant can change the messages. There are three messages. One message will display before the free shipping amount. The default message says “You’re only.” The second message displays after the amount and says “away from free shipping.” The final message displays after they “earn” free shipping. The message says, “You qualify for free shipping.” The final setting in the app is the color setting. A Shopify Merchant can change the text color, the icon color, and the progress bar color.

Second Market

For the new market, A Shopify Merchant needs to add the app as a block again. Then make their customization again. The free shipping amount will show up in the currency of the market. If they want to change the language of the message, that will need translation through an app.

Conclusion

Localizing the Free Shipping progress bar prevents losses on exchange rates. At the same time, Merchants get an opportunity to make foreign visitors feel more comfortable visiting their store.
